Background of CANEDOM

According to the 2019 Inter-census survey, Myanmar has a population of 54.5 million, with 2.7 million people having visual impairment. Eighty-five percent of people with visual impairment are unemployed due to lack of mobility and professional skills. More than seventy-five percent of those employed work in the massage sector.

After the COVID-19 pandemic, the economic situation affected the massage sector. The founder of Canedom, inspired by his experience working with the blind, realized many blind youth had potential but lacked opportunities beyond massage. This led to the creation of Canedom to explore other professional fields and train visually impaired individuals accordingly.

Canedom was founded in 2023. The name combines ‘cane,’ representing the white cane, and ‘dom,’ signifying freedom.
